Behind the scenes at Bavaria’s National Theatre

“Tradition, continuity and an impressive repertoire: these are the solid pillars supporting the Bayerische Staatsoper – one of the world’s leading opera houses.” – Bayerische Staatsoper

A backstage tour of the Bavarian National Theatre (‘Bayerische Staatsoper’) this week left NEC students dazzled by the beauty, impressed by the intricate logistics and itching to attend the next performance of Otello. The Bavarian National Theatre is one of the world’s leading opera houses; it is one of Munich’s most iconic sites and contributes to the city’s international reputation as one of the world’s most impressive cultural capitals. With a history of more than 350 years, a program filled with 450 performances per year and a stage which is deemed the third largest in the world, there is no question why.

A ‘behind the scenes’ tour was the perfect way for students to experience the inner and intricate workings of the theatre from an operational perspective. From the management of over 100 backstage crew members to the orchestration of a stage and set that changes on a daily basis, a highlight for NEC’s business students was learning about the flawless operations and team dynamics that are required to make the theatre run with impeccable precision.

Exposing students to the world of business and innovation is a vital part of a quality business education. At New European College, one way we do this is through industrial visits to some of Munich’s most iconic brands and businesses. In addition to the Bavarian National Theatre tour, students were given the opportunity to have a private tour of the BMW Group Plant Munich in October. Read more about their experience here.
